Standard carbide blanks or custom made-to-print parts: which buying path fits your project?

If your part is a standard wear series bought in volume, stock carbide blanks are usually the right call. If it is an NPI prototype, a special shape, or a replacement with a failure history behind it, made-to-print custom parts are the right path. The difference between the two is not price — it is whether the geometry and the material are already proven for your service.

Most sourcing mistakes in carbide come from treating a custom part like a standard one (ordering a blank and hoping the shape works), or a standard part like a custom one (paying for engineering you do not need). This guide separates the two paths so you can place the order correctly the first time.

When standard OEM blanks are the right call

Stock carbide blanks win in three situations:

  1. The shape is standard — your part matches an existing blank series (bushings, discs, strip, rod) within stock limits.
  2. The duty is proven — you have run the same material in the same service for years, and the current part wears acceptably.
  3. The volume justifies it — you buy enough to treat the blank as a stocked commodity and keep a local machinist to finish it.

In this case the winning move is simple: order the standard blank, finish the critical faces, and keep the rest as-sintered. Tighten only the surfaces that actually fit something — every extra ground face is cost without function.

When made-to-print custom parts are the right call

Go custom when any of these is true:

  1. It is an NPI prototype or a one-off special shape. There is no stock blank for a seat ring with an odd OD and a port geometry — the drawing is the only spec that exists.
  2. The last part failed in service. If the previous seat chipped at the edge, eroded through, or leached binder in sour media, the replacement is not “the same part again” — it is a material-selection problem wearing a part's shape. A custom path starts from the failure, not from the old order.
  3. The service is severe and the failure cost is high. High pressure drop, slurries, thermal cycling, fast cycling. The cost of one wrong grade in a critical valve far exceeds the price difference between blank and custom.
  4. The batch is small (10–200 pieces). At this volume, per-piece cost differences between paths are minor; what matters is that the part works the first time.

For a custom part, “custom” is not a price premium — it is spending the money where it counts: engineering judgment on the grade direction, tolerances, and inspection, instead of hoping a standard product happens to fit.

What a made-to-print order should include

A proper custom machining package, whether you use us or any supplier, should give you these on paper:

Sizes in your drawing may be in inches — carbide grinding holds inch-dimension tolerances without issue, so spec the fits you actually need.

How to start

Send the drawing or a photo, the media, temperature, pressure drop, and — if it is a replacement — a photo of the failed part. We return a grade direction, a realistic tolerance and lead-time view, and a quote within 1–2 business days. If your part is genuinely a standard-blank job, we will say so instead of selling you custom.
